How about an upgrade from the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX with 1gb to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX with 2gb - will that be as big an advantage as going with the i7?Īnd compare them, the GTX680MX does look a lot better. Going to an i7 processor, then, is probably a worthwhile upgrade. Here is a really good technical document on preparing an Apple computer to run FCP X. That will be a big help when doing rendering.

Hyper-Threading will make your Mac OS and FCP X be able to run 8 separate program threads at once, instead of only 4. The i7 has a 50% increase in cache size, and more importantly, it supports Intel's Hyper-Threading technology, while the i5 does not. It would be more than well worth spending the extra $200. I would select the 3.2 Gig model and add that upgrade to the 3.4 Core i7 if I were you. A system with a more powerful Intel Core i7 or Xeon CPU would be much better choice for video editing.Īpple has an option on the 3.2 Gig iMac to upgrade the CPU to a 3.4 Gig Core i7 for only $200 more. The main problem with both of those configurations is that they only use mainstream consumer Intel Core i5 CPU's. I decided the iMac 2.9 Ghz I5 processor with 32 gb ram (27" iMac) I needed more than 2 TB of HD space for video and the smaller iMac only does half that and you can not get a larger HD. For many reasons it is a better video solution for me. I just sold my GH-3 and bought a dedicated video camera. Unless Apple has changed something in the policy. If the computer needs to be repaired for any reason and you get base memory and add later you have to remove anything you added.
If you do not know or feel comfortable adding memory get it up front. Memory can be added later but the processor is permanent so to say. You always get the best processor first then memory. While the latter would give me a later upgrade path (memory is easy on the new iMacs), I'm also interested in what would be most usable right now. My upper budget is $2k, which affords me two options: a 2.9ghz model maxed out with memory (32gb), or a 3.2ghz model with the base 8gb. I'm not terribly concerned about hard drive space, but the processor/memory configuration is a puzzler.

I'm going to upgrade to a new iMac, the 27" model, but am getting conflicting opinions on how to configure it.
Shooting with Panasonic GH3s currently, and my late-2009 iMac isn't cutting it! Getting into video, as my clients are requesting it.
