I see pro photographers using their small mirrorless a lot, as much as possible in fact, but for some things the dSLR is the right tool if there has to be a proper balance between the camera body and larger lens. If you do need large tele lenses and the flexibility of auto focus zooms from a wide 24mm to a 280mm or beyond, and a handgrip that can hold them steady while you click away, the dSLR is the answer. What's the point in having a large camera with large lenses?
